Intellect has signaled its entry into a new market through a contract to provide secure electronic ticketing systems for the Dutch railways.

Intellect expects advanced electronic ticketing solutions will offer substantial business opportunities in transport systems in Europe.

Intellect's experience in security technology and advanced smart card-enabled payment systems, enables the company to extend its expertise into emerging markets such as electronic ticketing and other aspects of high security data transmission.

The Dutch railways contract resulted from an alliance between Intellect and the huge Swiss-based conglomerate, Ascom, which has integrated Intellect's secure payments technology with its ticketing systems. Ascom is an internationally active Swiss telecommunications, service automation and energy systems group with more than 10,000 employees worldwide and revenues of around A$3.5 billion.

Intellect is working closely with Ascom's Ticketing Machine Division in Switzerland to develop solutions for countries throughout Europe.

The Dutch railways, NS Reizigers (NSR) will install 800 - 1000 advanced electronic ticketing systems (called a MiniAutomaat) in railway stations. NSR plans to invest about A$30 million in the electronic ticketing project.

Intellect was selected for the project because electronic ticketing systems demand high levels of security, reliability and ease of use. Working with Ascom and CCV (The Netherlands), Intellect has adapted its BIM20X0 terminals to allow passengers to buy tickets using debit, credit and e-purse transactions easily and securely -- indoors, outdoors and on the move.
