Component Mounting

Weidmuller Australia has developed a cost-saving surface mount technology process for mounting PCB components.

Until now, pin connectors were manually put in place and either manually or wave-soldered - a relatively costly process that has been made obsolete by the advent of SL-SMT pin connectors which are heat-resistant up to 260°C and can be automatically inserted.

Consistency in manufacturing is guaranteed because the pin connector can be placed automatically onto the PCB together with all other SMT components, such as ICs and passive components.

In the now-outmoded manufacturing process, soldering paste is applied to the printed circuit board using templates.

This step is now simplified because Weidmuller's 1.5 mm short SL-SMT pin connectors require minimal soldering paste and the process can be completed using normal templates for fine-grid technology.

These short pins also allow double-sided paste application and the mounting of connectors to both sides of printed circuit boards.

Product-specific tray packaging, or tape-on-reel packaging in component feeders supports automatic mounting and assembly with the SL-SMT. This results in fully automatic assembly in standard pick-and-place systems, with no restraint on the user's choice of equipment in accordance with IEC/EN 60286 packaging standards.

Pin connectors are transferred from tape or carrier trays by means of a vacuum pipette within the pick-and-place station. To ensure reliability and precision in this process, the vertical version is supplied already equipped with a highly temperature-resistant pick-and-place pad.
