90 nm processors now available

AMD says it is achieving a smooth transition to 90 nm manufacturing and has distributed low-power 90 nm Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processors for thin and light notebooks (previously codenamed 'Oakville'.

Manufacturers are expected to launch systems based on the 90 nm Athlon 64 processors in the coming months.

Benefits of 90 nm include: silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process enhancements provide higher performance, lower power transistors, which can be integrated into new dual-core designs; the transistors are much smaller and more power efficient than their 130 nm predecessors, which allows for greater densities within chips. This will better enable additional components, including a second core and other improvements, on the same chip without a dramatic increase to chip size.
