Monolithic Power Systems MP28164 buck/boost converter

The MP28164 is a high-efficiency, low-quiescent current buck/boost converter that operates from input voltage above, equal or below the output voltage. The device provides a compact solution for products powered by a one-cell lithium-ion or multicell alkaline battery where the output voltage is within the battery voltage range, such as portable instruments, tablet PCs and super-cap chargers.

The product uses current mode control with a fixed PWM frequency for optimal stability and transient response. The fixed 2 MHz switching frequency and integrated low Rds(ON) MOSFETs minimise the footprint while maintaining high efficiency.

To ensure long battery life, the converter has an optional pulse skipping mode that reduces the switching frequency under light load conditions. For other low-noise applications, where pulse skipping mode may cause interference, a high logic input on the MODE pin ensures fixed-frequency PWM operation under all load conditions.

The device operates with input voltage from 1.2 to 5.5 V to provide adjustable output voltage (1.5 to 5 V). With an input from 2.5 to 5.5 V, it can supply a maximum 2 A current to the load at a 3.3 V output voltage. The product is available in a small QFN-11 (2 x 3 mm) package.
