STMicroelectronics MIS2DH motion sensor for medical applications

Friday, 18 September, 2015 | Supplied by: Braemac Pty Ltd

STMicroelectronics has introduced the MIS2DH, an ultralow-power 3-axis accelerometer designed for medical applications, including implantable devices classified by US FDA as Class III. The off-the-shelf solution can enable functions such as activity monitoring and posture sensing to be included in a wide range of medical applications.

Till now, a major obstacle for SMEs wanting to develop medical devices has been the high costs associated with custom-designed sensors and obtaining FDA certification. The MIS2DH addresses this problem by combining a 3-axis mechanical element and an integrated electronic circuit in a single package, along with a set of collaterals required by users seeking FDA Class III approval.

Other technical features include: ultrasmall size (2 x 2 x 1 mm3); ultralow power consumption (down to 2 µA in low-power mode); ±2/±4/±8/±16g selectable full scale; 8-, 10- and 12-bit operating modes; 1–5 kHz output data rate; FIFO buffer and programmable interrupt to minimise system power consumption; I2C/SPI digital outputs; and 1.71–3.6 V operating voltage.

The accelerometer has been developed and produced in full compliance with the rules of ST’s medical domain.
