IRH Components has released a transmitter module manufactured by Nordic for the short range radio market. The ultrasmall transmitter, nRF402A, offers integration and data rate and is aimed at the battery powered transmitter market.

The nRF402A complements Nordic's portfolio of transceivers such as the accompanying nRF401A transceiver.

The devices offer 20 kbps with a full 10 dBm output power - all in a 14 pin SSOP package.

Applications include the automatic meter reading market, safety alarm applications, keyless entry and different remote control applications.

Short range transmitters and transceivers are used in applications where the user wants to transmit low data rate digital signals over distances no greater than 1 km.

By using the nRF402A and an nRF401A a one-way system (simplex) can be set up, for instance a remote control, or transmitting a meter reading from an electricity or gas meter.

Two nRF401As can be used if a two-way system (duplex) is needed, for example as a wireless modem.

Both the nRF402A and nRF401A are equipped with an extensive power down scheme, and this coupled with a low power consumption enables battery life times of 10 years.

Both devices can operate on data which is not encoded/formatted according to the Manchester encoding scheme.

This removes a substantial load on the processor in the system and a cheaper processor may be used.

The nRF402A and an nRF401A are available in 14 and 20 pin SSOP packages.
