Next-generation communication ports

Interworld Electronics has released Quatech's new-generation PCI Express and ExpressCard serial and parallel adapters. PCI Express adapters and ExpressCards are based on a high-speed serial I/O bus that maintains backward compatibility with existing PCI applications and drivers.

The PCI Express Cards are available in 2-, 4- or 6-port RS-232 serial configurations, 2-port parallel as well as combined 2-port parallel plus 4-port serial configurations.

The serial ports are based on 16C550-compatible UARTs with 16 byte buffers and provide Baud rates up to 115.2 Kbps. The parallel ports support standard parallel port (SPP), enhanced parallel port (EPP) and enhanced capability port (ECP) operating modes. Data transfer rates of up to 1.5 MBps are achievable.

The PCIe-based ExpressCard line from Quatech Inc supersedes older technology and is engineered for compatibility with new laptop models. The ExpressCards are available in single- and dual-port RS-232 or RS422/485 configurations. A parallel port ExpressCard that supports bidirectional, ECP and EPP modes is also available.
