Alcatel job losses

Monday, 15 October, 2001

A rationalisation of Alcatel's submarine cable making operations has seen the loss of 320 jobs in Australia, as its Port Botany plant in Sydney is placed in neutral.

Part of a worldwide retrenchment of over 3000 staff in its submarine and optical cable divisions, the job losses are following a sharp decline in demand for ocean-bound cable. The cable unit currently employs 428 staff and does not expect demand to pick up until 2003.
