Battery recycling

All waste batteries and accumulators such as lead acid and nickel-cadmium cells must be recycled under new legislation enacted by the European Union.

The action comes following environmental concerns about the hazardous waste generated by disposing of electrical and electronic equipment.

Now there will be a recycling efficiency of between 65 and 85% although the process does not include the steps involved in sorting or preparing batteries for recycling but is defined as the reprocessing operation carried out on waste batteries and accumulators.

Only when the materials have ceased to be waste is the recycling considered to be complete.
