Production up in 240 Hz panels
Double-frame rate (100 and 120 Hz) and quadruple-frame rate (200 and 240 Hz) LCD TV panels have quickly become integral to LCD TV panel makers' product roadmaps and shipment plans.
In its Quarterly Double Frame Rate TV Panel Shipment & Forecast Report, DisplaySearch says that 2009 shipments of 40″ and above 100/120 Hz and 200/240 Hz LCD TV panels are forecast to reach 16.9 million units and 4.2 million units, which is 40% and 10% of total targets for 40″+ units in 2009.
As the LCD TV industry looks to differentiate and enhance performance, double- and quadruple-frame rates have emerged as the solution to motion blur issues. The forecast is that 50% of all 40″ and larger panels will be double- or quadruple-frame panels in 2009.
In the second quarter of 2009, production of double- and quadruple-frame panels reached 6.4 million units, achieving 18.3% penetration, compared with 16.2% penetration in the first quarter.
Samsung led shipments with a 29.0% share in 100/120 Hz, followed by LG Display at 18.3% and CMS, AUO, Sharp and IPS-Alpha.
In 200/240 Hz panel shipments, Samsung and LG Display dominate the market.
