Next generation embedded computer module

Kontron's newest and most innovative product sets the standard of the next generation of Embedded Technology. Known as ECM (Embedded Computer Module), it houses control boards within a secure module for use by OEMs and Integrators as a technology building block for a wide variety of application-specific systems.

It can be carried, mounted, embedded or worn. It features a range of Intel Pentium M processors from 1.1 gig to 1.6 gig, 1 GB of DDR RAM, integrated 802.11b/g wireless networking capabilities, and a rugged, removable 40-80GB hard drive. With Mil-Std certified packaging, the ECM is sufficiently rugged for use in military and industrial harsh environments. Using a docking station or Dog House as it is being called, the customer can tailor the docking station to suit the real-world interfaces as per the applications need. The customer interfaces with the ECM via a Port replicator allowing the access to mini PCI bus, and internal peripherals like USB, Serial ports, etc.

Due for full production release in March 2005 the ECM brings the power of a desk top computer into a portable, removable and rugged computer module small enough to fit in your pocket.

With the ever increasing expense of developing computer platforms and the high frequency bus speeds, it is unlikely that the majority of companies to day, have the expertise or finance to fund development of there own computer platform. Kontron as a world leader in small scale integration, sees engineers and integrators using the ECM as a plug in component (this component being the computer) allowing companies to concentrate on their own core business. Using this concept will also allow instant access to their market place, with increased savings in upgrades and maintenance due to the ease of removal and replacement, also being rugged and sealed, the customer can position the product in harsh environments with out the add cost of incasing current technology.
