Planetary gearboxes

Though they measure 10 mm in diameter, the R10 family of planetary gearboxes from Portescap is available, as standard, in a choice of six ratios between 4:1 and 4096:1.

Gearboxes with non-standard ratios can also be supplied, and all models offer high continuous torque at 100 mNm.

Ball bearing versions, with metal covers, are also available. Gearbox length depends on the number of stages, which is determined by the required ratio. Single-stage units are 9 mm long, and have an efficiency of 90%, while six-stage versions are 26.5 mm long, and have an efficiency of 50%.

The gearboxes snap into place on the motor.

The robust plastic material from which standard R10 gearboxes are constructed gives a single-stage weight at 3 g.

The planetary design allows operation with shaft input speeds of up to 10,000 rpm, while the gears provide low backlash. R10 gearboxes are bidirectional and have a wide operating temperature range of –30 to +65°C.

They are also suitable for intermittent operation at up to 150% of their continuous maximum torque rating.
