Sun Microsystems has available its first Sun Fire and Sun Blade systems powered by quad-core AMD Opteron processors.

The X4140, X4240 and X4440 servers, the latest to join the company’s x64 (x86, 64-bit) server range, give users energy efficiency, density and scalability and a choice of operating systems, including the Solaris 10, OpenSolaris, Linux, Windows and VMware.

Additional systems announced with quad-core Opteron processors include the Sun Fire X2200 M2, X4100 M2, X4200 M2, X4600 M2 and Sun Blade X8440 servers.

The X4140 and X4240, with eight and 16 disk drives, can function as mini-storage systems for scale-out applications such as database, HPC and business intelligence/data warehousing.

The X4440 and X4600 M2 offer memory comparable to other systems, but in half the space. The X4440 is said to be the only 4-socket x64 Opteron server in a 2U form factor.

The X4600 M2 and X8440 are optimised for virtulisatiion, with high memory capacity. The X4440 is claimed to have the highest memory capacity for a 2U, 4-socket server.
