EPOS intelligent positioning controllers

Maxon motor has developed a new range of intelligent positioning controllers known as EPOS. Small and compact they feature the very latest technology.

The controllers are currently available in two versions: a midi-version at 24V and 5A continuous current, and a micro version at 24V and 1A. This means that highly dynamic precision drives and control systems can now be realised in the minutest dimensions. Several drives can be networked and coordinated through the standardised CANopen interface and the controllers operate in position, speed or current control mode.

The controller is commanded via the CANopen interface or alternately via RS232. Electronically or mechanically commutated motors can be driven. A sinusoidal commutation of current and space vector modulation (SVM) is being used for brushless EC Motors. This not only improves motor efficiency but minimizes movement ripple and noise. The algorithms run on a fast signal processor and built-in chokes ensure smoothness of operation, even for low impedance motors. The two EPOS have free digital as well as analog inputs and digital outputs for connecting peripheral drive equipment, limit switches etc.

A windows based user interface is available for configuring setting up and autotuning control parameters. It is supplied together with a comprehensive operating instructions CD. The CD also contains various software examples and libraries for network operation with PC or SPS and CANopen. The operating instructions and software can be downloaded free of charge from Maxon's homepage.
