CSIRO is currently involved in a project to promote the 'uptake' of advanced microjoining as an integral part of efficient design and assembly.

Microjoining is considered critical to the successful performance of many components for miniaturised products, with sophisticated joining processes needed to achieve low defect rates. It is considered a vital part of advanced packaging technology for the photonics, electronics and medical industries.

CSIRO and Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA) have run seminars to increase awareness of the benefits available from state-of-the-art interconnection and packaging of manufactured goods, including MEMS or micro-electronic mechanical systems. MEMS is the integration of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators and electronics on a common silicon substrate through the use of microfabrication technology.
