Sony recruits component part-makers online

Thursday, 11 April, 2002

Sony is actively searching for component parts, as well as the technology required for development of new products, from its existing component suppliers worldwide via the internet.

This public recruitment system is called "MEETS" and is for the exchange of information between technicians and the component makers.

The system was first trialled in Japan and until now there has been approximately 100 domestic makers participating in the scheme. This number is expected grow to 500.

The system will also be put in use in Europe, Southeast Asia and China next year.

The main purpose of setting up such a system is to shorten the product development time and lower the cost by using the competition between component makers.

To the suppliers, this practice may increase the risk of losing business upon the presentation of an uncompetitive quotation. But on the other hand this system facilitates a channel for new suppliers to promote themselves to Sony.

Sony is also building a new system called "SPIRITS", which allows the trading of parts over the internet.

In the future the two systems shall merge into one, allowing Sony to select component makers based on technical and quotation factors.
