element14 has added the Bourns power resistor PWR221T-30 series to its inventory.

The series makes it suitable for tasks such as current limiting, capacitor discharge or current measurement circuits in power supplies for telecom and industrial applications. The resistors are also suitable for air conditioning equipment, medical equipment, wind power generation machines and high power microscopes.

The series is a TO-220 style resistor that is used in a variety of different configurations of power supplies. The main functions are to absorb the inrush current caused by the switching action of a power device such as a MOSFET or IGBT or measure and control the current used in the power supply as a shunt.

Features include: the ceramic backplane allows the resistors to disperse heat more effectively when placed against a heat sink; the characteristic thick film allows them to handle a large surge of power, providing added protection to electronic devices; they have low inductance due to their ceramics; ‘through-hole’ design dissipates heat; high power rating of 30 W at 25°C allows them withstand the heating effect that occurs when a large current passes.
