Maxim has introduced the MAX1966/MAX1967 voltage-mode, 100 kHz PWM step-down DC-DC controllers to provide low cost 1 to 15 A power supplies.

Both devices feature digital soft-start, current-limit and short-circuit protection; 100 kHz operation allows the use of low-cost inductors and electrolytic capacitors; 5 ohm (max) gate drivers permit up to 15 A output current.

Applications include set-top boxers, linear regulator replacement in network equipment, and telecom central office equipment, DVD read/write drives, automotive, consumer and industrial products.

The devices feature gate drivers rated at 2.5 ohm (typ) and 5 ohm (max), allowing a wide range of output currents from 1 to 15 A.

They drive external N-channel FETs and provide current-limit and short-circuit protection without requiring a current-sense resistor, saving cost and improving efficiency. The output voltage range extends from 0.8 V to 0.88 x V IN.

The 1967 has a 2.7 to 28 V input range and is suitable for unregulated wall-cube inputs or 3.3/5/12/24 V bus applications. The 1966 has a 2.7 to 5.5 V input range and is designed to address 3.3 and 5 V bus applications.
