GE XVR16 6U VME single-board computer

GE Intelligent Platforms has announced the XVR16 6U VME rugged single-board computer featuring quad-core 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture.

The capabilities of the product will not only allow it to address existing command/control applications, but also to be deployed in demanding high-performance embedded computing (HPEC) signal processing applications such as ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), sonar and radar.

The computer offers existing users of the XVR14 and XVR15 more processing power, graphics performance, functionality and I/O capability. It does this within the same power envelope as its predecessors, enabling simple drop-in replacement. Using the latest processors from Intel, the device is said to provide more capability but without any penalty in terms of size, weight, power consumption or heat dissipation.

The Intel Core i7 architecture brings with it several improvements. These include Intel Advance Vector Extensions (Intel AVX 2.0) enhancements which provide a performance improvement in floating-point-intensive computations. Media and graphics performance is also enhanced, capable of delivering 2D/3D graphics with high-quality playback. Improved security comes in the form of Intel AES New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) enhancements which use hardware to accelerate data encryption and decryption.

The product features up to 16 GB of memory and benefits from the processor’s support of PCI Express Gen3 technology and USB 3.0, providing greater bandwidth for onboard and offboard connectivity. It supports two onboard PMC/XMC expansion sites. The computer is available in five build versions from air cooled to fully rugged, providing solutions for environments from benign to extremely harsh.
