Maxim MAX11210 single-channel 24-bit ADC

Maxim has introduced the MAX11210, a single-channel, 24-bit ADC that offers a 23.9-bit effective resolution (ENOB) at <300 µA.

The higher ENOB eliminates power-hungry gain stages while achieving the highest precision possible from the sensor. This allows the device to meet the tight power budget (500 µA, max) for 4-20 mA loop sensors, an application that puts a premium on power dissipation and high ENOB. The ADC is suitable for portable instruments, temperature sensors and other precision applications demanding low power consumption.

The device reduces power, cost and size in two ways; it offers four general-purpose input/output lines, and integrates buffer amplifiers on the analog and reference inputs.

The four GPIO lines can be used to control an external 16-channel multiplexer, effectively converting the ADC into a 16-channel device.

Making the multiplexer control local to the ADC eliminates up to four digital isolators. Isolation is required to achieve the best performance from an ultra-low-noise system.

The integrated buffers eliminate the need for external buffers or gain stages.

The ADC offers a software-programmable oversampling ratio for output rates up to 120 sps with zero latency and up to 480 sps in continuous-conversion mode. Simplifying device and system calibration, it automatically self-calibrates for device offset and gain.

In addition, the ADC offers user-programmable offset and gain registers for enhanced system-level calibration where needed. Other integrated features include programmable gain from 1 to 16 and 100 dB (min) 50 Hz or 60 Hz rejection.

Complementing the device, the company offers a family of 24-, 20-, 18- and 16-bit ADCs in 16-pin QSOP or 10-pin microMAX(R) packages. The microMAX packages feature a 2-wire serial interface, with a clock input and fixed data outputs of 120 sps or 13.75 sps.
