Kemet has introduced what it claims are the first 35 V rated surface-mount polymer tantalum chip capacitors.
Designated the T521 series, the initial offering includes the low-profile V case size (7.3 x 4.3 x 1.9 mm) with a rating of 15 µF and maximum ESR ratings of 125 mΩ.
Future releases will include higher case heights (7.3 x 4.3 x 3.0 mm) with target capacitance values of 22 and 33 µF.
To date, these devices are most commonly used in 10 V or lower applications and are limited to voltage applications that do not exceed 20 of continuous duty. The restrictions are driven by limitations in the materials and manufacturing processes that in the past have prevented higher voltage ratings.
By overcoming these limitations, the company has constructed and qualified the first polymer tantalum capacitors suitable for applications of up to 25 V of continuous duty.
In addition, the devices have demonstrated surge voltage handling capabilities of more than 46 V.
