Thorlabs ultralow-noise semiconductor lasers

Thorlabs has announced its ultralow-noise semiconductor laser product line, which offers a combination of high output power (>100 mW), narrow linewidth (<100 Hz) and ultralow relative intensity noise (<-165 dB/Hz). Based on a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) external cavity design, the lasers provide output centred at 1550 nm. They are suitable for demanding applications in remote sensing, optical comb generation and RF/microwave photonics.

Commercialised in collaboration with Morton Photonics, each laser is packaged in an extended 14-pin butterfly housing featuring two thermoelectric cooler elements for precise laser and FBG control and stabilisation. Offered in both polarisation maintaining and single-mode fibre variants, the lasers can be optimised for wavelength tuning by temperature or current depending on the application.
