Motorola semiconductor unit to cut 4000 jobs
Motorola in the US has said it would cut up to 4,000 jobs from its semiconductor manufacturing division as a cost-cutting move.
A statement said the reductions were "a continuation of cost-reduction measures Motorola began in the fourth quarter" and were an effort "to boost efficiency and improve profitability".
"These measures will include a substantial reduction in capital spending and operating budgets, further business and manufacturing consolidations, and the elimination of up to 4,000 jobs during the year", the statement said.
"While job reductions are extremely painful, they are a necessary part of our cost-reduction needs," Fred Shlapak, president of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector, said.
