Chip prices rise

11 December, 2001

With a general chip drought, and higher than expected demand, chip prices are rising in the PC processor sector, leading to hopes of a recovery.

Surface Mount LVDS

11 December, 2001

M-tron has announced surface mount LVDS output oscillators and voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXOs). These devices offer low noise performance in hot swap applications, fibre channel, gigabit ethernet, and other IEEE 1394-based high-speed data systems.

Chip sector begins to grow

22 November, 2001

Orders for semiconductor-manufacturing equipment rose in October 2001, according to data released by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International.

ADSL/SHDSL Chip

13 November, 2001

Ericsson Microelectronics has announced what it claims is the world's first single-chip low-power analogue front-end for ADSL/SHDSL transceiver solutions.

Move toward plastic chips

12 October, 2001

Teams of researchers are working to find a way to use organic polymers as material for microelectronic production.

Semiconductor sales now down

20 September, 2001

Worldwide semiconductor sales may decrease 34% in 2001 after terrorist attacks stalled shipments last week and may hurt consumer purchases, market researcher IC Insights, said. This follows last weeks report that sales would increase in 2001.

Monolithic ICs

11 September, 2001

A series of MOS monolithic integrated circuits (MOSMICs) that will allow designers to upgrade the performance of UHF and VHF tuners at no additional cost has been announced by Vishay Intertechnology. Serving as a low-noise RF input stage, the 'X' devices provide improved automatic gain control and cross modulation behaviour compared with previous-generation MOSMICs.

HP to buy Compaq?

04 September, 2001

Is has been reported that Hewlett-Packard will buy Compaq for an estimated $47.5 billion. Both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have reported the deal, citing people close to the negotiations, but both companies have declined comment. Compaq Australia said it could not confirm or deny the reports.

Power Supply Chip

14 August, 2001

Designed to simplify offline power supplies up to 15 W, the L6590 fully integrated power supply chip from STMicroelectronics integrates a 700 V power MOSFET switch, plus all the control circuits needed to build a converter using flyback, boost or forward topologies.

Chip speed breakthrough

06 July, 2001

Simplex and Toshiba have announced a semiconductor architecture with the potential to deliver simultaneous improvements of 10+% greater chip performance, 20+% less power consumption and 30+% more chips per wafer.

Rittal and Phoenix relocation

05 July, 2001

Rittal and Phoenix Contact have relocated to new premises in the Adelaide suburb of Torrensville, offering a central location for transport and customer support.

Wafer level reliability testing of semiconductors

05 July, 2001

As semiconductor devices shrink in size and become more complex, it has become necessary for fabricators (fabs) to use more parameters to monitor and control production processes

Low Power PLLs

14 June, 2001

National Semiconductor has announced the LMX23xxU series of ultra low power dual phase locked loop frequency synthesisers, the latest addition to National's family of PLLatinum PLLs for wireless applications.

Clock Rate Adapters

10 April, 2001

Dallas Semiconductor has introduced the DS21600 series of clock rate adapters, integrated circuits for converting signal frequencies between E- and T-carrier clock rates without external components.

Waveform Digitiser

10 April, 2001

Analogic has introduced the fast DBS 908, a 2 GigaSample/second waveform digitiser, plug-in module for the VXI-compliant DBS 9905 carrier module.
